The console is a physical computer where you, the user, can input a command to receive an oputput. A terminal program emulates this physicial console and is present on almost operating system (OS). MacOS and Linux ('Ubuntu' at the Interaction Station) use the same terminal shell (the Unix shell), which means the same commands can be used interchangeably. The shell is the program inside the terminal that actually processess the commands and outputs the results.
